Wireless Router vs Access point? Which Suits your demands


Nowadays wireless network has become very common. You will see the wireless router in every office, organization, and even in every home nowadays. A wireless router is mostly used for the connection. But you have often heard of other wireless networking devices such as “Wireless Access point” or WAP. Do you know what is WAP (Wireless access point)? What’s the difference between WAP and router? What is a Router:

A router is a device that is used to route the internet to make an internet connection with different devices at home or offices. It can make internet connectivity in both wired and wireless mode and direct traffic (both incoming and outgoing) in an efficient manner. It provides both types of connectivity

  1. Wireless connectivity
  2. Connectivity via Ethernet cable

Everyone who has internet connectivity most probably, have a router. A router may be a device that routes data packets between completely different networks. A typical client router may be a wireless router and it’s 2 network interfaces: LAN (including WLAN) and WAN. It serves to attach a local area a network (LAN) to a  WAN (wide area network). that’s to mention if we would like to attach to the web, we have a tendency to should use a router. Routers on the opposite hand will manage a complete home or tiny business giving network capability to several computers and devices at the same time, either using wire or wirelessly (when we use a wireless router). Nowadays, the wireless router is becoming famous increasingly because of easy installation without cable.

How the router works:

You connect the wire of the internet to one of the Ethernet ports of the router. After this, you can easily connect three or four devices on the router via Ethernet cable (devices depends on Ethernet ports). You can see that not only wired connection but wireless connection be also easily made using a router. This proves the point of both wired and wireless connectivity via the router.


What is a wireless access point (WAP):

The biggest difference between router and WAP is that router provides both wired and unwired connectivity while WAP provides only wireless connectivity. It is a device that is used to bridge traffic from wired LAN into wireless connections. It is not here to route anything, it is just here to convert wired network into wireless.

As for access point (AP), it’s generally wire connected to a local area network router or switch then to form a straightforward wireless network. This was done by employing a coax to attach a switch and an AP and therefore the AP would then communicate with wireless fidelity devices and providing them network access. Wireless access points don’t route any network. It simply converts AN existing wired network (LAN) into a wireless one (WLAN). A router is often an access point (AP) however an access point can never be a router.

How to SET WAP:

Here I will guide you on how to install WAP (Wireless access point) in your home and office. Simply connect the Ethernet cable from the router to the WAP device and turn it ON. You have nothing more to do, your network is set.


Although both of these are connectivity devices and seems to perform a similar function, These have many differences. These devices seem like a cousin. Here I have listed some of the differences: router vs access point

We use WAP for several reasons some of which are listed below

  • Signal STRENGTH AND COVERAGE: sometimes router signal can be dead or weak in areas, which are out of router coverage. So, in this case, we add WAP in this area which strengthens the signals and end the dead spots
  • INCREASING WIRELESS CONNECTION: sometimes you have a lot of wireless connection on the same router, so, in order to manage this, we can add various WAP (wireless access points).


  • A router will be a very suitable option for homes and small offices where the number of users is limited and some wired connection is required
  • A router can be used when there is no need for scaling up
  • But if you are providing a connection in a hostel or big organization, where the number of wireless users is greater, you should choose WAP.
  • If you want to create an efficient and reliable wireless network to facilitate a huge community, you should most probably opt for WAP.


wireless access point vs Wireless router, it all depends on what you want. Setting up Wi-Fi architecture have some key factors that require to be considered:

  • the size of the venue
  • the range of the network
  • Count of the Wi-Fi users
  • The access demands

As a go-to selection for several users, wireless routers are nearly indispensable for each family and tiny business. when the wireless access points returning onto the scene, today’s massive enterprises tend to adopt them to hide a much bigger space or to support additional users in larger LANs.
